🎤 ABOUT THE BAND
The South are an impressive 9-piece band featuring former members of The Beautiful South, including singer Alison Wheeler and lifelong sax player Gaz Birtles. Since original singer Dave Hemingway left in 2016, Gaz has moved across to front the band with Alison, taking on vocal duties. Keeping with the classic two-male-singer dynamic, trumpet player Gareth John now shares vocal duties on select tracks, while Gaz occasionally returns to his roots on the sax!

Since the demise of The Beautiful South in 2007, this exciting live band has spent 14 years touring UK theatres and festivals, bringing back the full sound and arrangements of these treasured songs.

The St Albans Symphony Orchestra (SASO) returns this March 2026 with a diverse and captivating programme, ranging from Spanish ballet rhythms to sweeping Romantic symphonies.

🎼 Manuel De Falla – Three-Cornered Hat (Suite No. 2)
We start with music from the 1919 Diaghilev ballet, based on a book by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. This lively suite tells the story of a magistrate infatuated with a miller's faithful wife, bringing colourful Spanish flair to the stage.

🎼 Jean-Michel Damase – Flute Concerto
Then, our Principal Flautist Hattie Jolly will step forward as the soloist in Damase’s delightful Flute Concerto, promising a performance of elegance and virtuosity.

🎼 Sergei Rachmaninoff – Symphony No. 2
After the interval, the orchestra will play Rachmaninoff’s magnificent Symphony No. 2. Known for its rich melodies and emotional depth, this is one of the true giants of the symphonic repertoire.

Wristbands for March weekends are £10 per person with children under 0.9m able to experience the joy of Wicksteed Park for free with a paying accompanying adult.

Individual tickets are also available to purchase on the day for £3.50 per person per ride!

Tickets and wristbands will be available to purchase at the Gift Shop on the day of your visit, or you can book online NOW via the event link.
