Vanbrugh arrived at Stowe in 1719, working alongside garden designer Charles Bridgeman and commissioned by Lord Cobham, who had just begun shaping the estate after years abroad.
His role was to bring architectural drama to the landscape and help unify the existing house - and although many of his original structures were later altered or replaced, his flair helped begin Stowe’s transformation into one of Britain’s finest 18th-century estates.
🏠 EXTRA AT STOWE HOUSE
Stowe House (not National Trust) will also be offering visitors a special £3 admission (usually £9.50 for adults / £7.50 for National Trust members) along with a selection of events including crafts, workshops and storytelling. To find out more, visit stowehouse.org.

There is an 800m walk from the car park to the garden entrance, with a free access shuttle operating daily from the café to the garden entrance. The ultimate outdoor watersports experience for families & groups - climb, leap, bounce & splash your way around both inflatable courses packed with fun obstacles. Explore 2 giant courses during your session (rotating after 30-mins) - twice the fun for the same price! How long will you stay dry?
🧦 Grip socks (or soft-sole water shoes): Optional, but recommended for extra comfort and grip. Socks are available to buy on the day. Wetsuits are also optional, but recommended & can hired on the day or pre-booked.
🏊♂️ Participants must be able to swim at least 50 metres while wearing a buoyancy aid and be comfortable falling into open water.

Led by one of our experienced staff, this walk will take you through ancient woodlands, around Furzton Lake, and include Shenley Toot and parts of the North Bucks Way.
This is a longer walk at 10.6 kms (6.6 miles), and since it takes place after dark, please be prepared. We’ll keep to a moderate/fast pace, with breaks along the way to rest, regroup, and explore.
