📖 HISTORY OF THE FRENCH HORN
The French Horn in Steppingley is a historic village pub with deep roots in Bedfordshire’s countryside charm. Though its exact origins are unclear, it is recognized as a building of some antiquity, having been refaced with a modern front.Adjacent to the pub is a large old thatched barn, traditionally believed to be the former tithe barn, adding to the establishment's historical significance.
Local lore suggests that the pub may have been named in honor of John Schorne, a 13th-century rector of Steppingley renowned for his healing abilities and credited with imprisoning the devil in a boot—a tale that inspired the Jack-in-the-Box toy.
In more recent history, The French Horn gained attention when celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli launched it as his second gastropub in 2008, offering both formal dining and a casual bar area.
